Mendelssohn’s cantata Die erste Walpurgisnacht, after Goethe’s poem of Druids defending their rites against suppression, is paired with Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor and two works by Florence Price, the first African-American woman recognised as a symphonic composer: Song of Hope and the orchestral Ethiopia’s Shadow in America. Artistic director Michael Driscoll leads soprano Maria Whitcomb, mezzo-soprano Laura Couch and the New Philharmonia Orchestra.
