“Worthy to be Any Man’s Friend”: Lecture on Henry David Thoreau
Concord historian Richard Smith talks about Henry David Thoreau and his friendships with figures now commemorated at Mount Auburn, among them Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Charles Sumner and Margaret Fuller. Thoreau is not buried there, but the “Hermit of Walden Pond” knew many of the cemetery's literary and political figures and was less of a recluse than the label suggests. Afterward Smith leads a walk to some of their monuments.
