Physical Math Seminar: Nicholas Zolman (University of Washington)
Nicholas Zolman of the University of Washington speaks on extreme events such as earthquakes and coronal mass ejections in high-dimensional chaotic systems. Standard reductions like PCA discard the structures that instabilities amplify into rare events; Zolman shows how gradients of a quantity of interest reveal a sensitive subspace, used to build early-warning systems and controllers, with results on turbulent bursts, oscillator synchronization and ocean rogue waves.
