SCSB Colloquium: Tom Nowakowski on Building a Brain, One Cell at a Time
Tom Nowakowski, associate professor at UCSF, describes how his lab tags individual neural stem cells with genetic barcodes and uses single-cell sequencing to reconstruct the family trees of hundreds of thousands of brain cells in mouse and human tissue. The work maps where excitatory and inhibitory neurons originate, how the human cortex expands, and, through a modified rabies virus, the brain's earliest transient wiring before birth.
