John Hancock's Middlesex Canal and Medford
J. Jeremiah Breen, president of the Middlesex Canal Association, speaks on the canal as part of an interstate water highway essential to the Industrial Revolution in Massachusetts. Chartered in 1793, the 27-mile canal ran from the Charles River at Boston to the Merrimack at what is now Lowell, with 20 locks and eight aqueducts. The corporation was liquidated in 1853, having lost out to the railroad.
