Aga Khan Program 'An Evening With': Anna Pronina on the “waqf question” in Soviet Turkestan and Architectural Restoration
Anna Pronina examines how, between 1922 and 1927, Samarkand's preservation commission and its parent body Turkomstaris sought revenues from waqf, the Islamic endowments that had long sustained mosques, madrasas and shrines, bringing them into conflict with the Soviet waqf administration and local Muslim communities. Pronina, a cultural historian with a PhD from Central European University, is an Aga Khan Fellow at MIT and co-curated Split Together, Merged Apart in Moscow.
