Andrzej Wajda's Ashes and Diamonds (1958), from Jerzy Andrzejewski's 1948 novel, takes place on May 8, 1945, VE Day, after the Red Army has driven the Germans out of Poland: Zbigniew Cybulski's Maciek, a Home Army fighter, joins a doomed underground plot against the new Soviet-backed order. The last film of Wajda's wartime trilogy opens the Archive's centenary retrospective, Once There Was History ... Andrzej Wajda at 100.
