Mathias Énard on The Deserters
Mathias Énard discusses The Deserters, a novel that sets the story of a soldier fleeing a nameless war against that of an East German mathematician who survives Buchenwald and devotes his life to communism. Charlotte Mandell’s translation won the 2026 French-American Foundation Translation Prize for Fiction. Énard, whose Compass won the 2015 Prix Goncourt, talks with Benoit Landon, a literary journalist and librarian at the French Library.
