Knighthood and the Realities of War in Medieval Germany
David S. Bachrach, a historian of medieval warfare, challenges the picture of German warfare as the business of a few mounted warrior aristocrats. His paper, for MIT's Ancient and Medieval Studies Colloquium, takes up "knighthood" as a problem of military history, the reality of pre-crusade warfare, the centrality of sieges and fortifications, and what that implies about the scale of war and of government.
