The Padrone
Odyssey Opera programmes three composers of the Second New England School: Edward MacDowell's tone poem Lamia, drawn from Greek myth; Amy Beach's concert aria Jephthah's Daughter, drawn from the Book of Judges; and George W. Chadwick's opera The Padrone, a portrait of immigrant life in turn-of-the-century Boston. All three helped define the city's musical identity around 1900.
