The Promised Land (1975)
Andrzej Wajda's 1975 adaptation of Nobel laureate Władysław Reymont's 1899 novel is a three-hour epic of 1880s Łódź, where three friends, a Pole, a German and a Jew (Daniel Olbrychski, Andrzej Seweryn and Wojciech Pszoniak), open a cotton mill to ride the Industrial Revolution, enriching and destroying themselves. Extreme wide-angle lenses make the looms menacing, and Wojciech Kilar wrote the avant-garde score. Part of the Archive's Wajda centenary retrospective.
