A Labor of Love: The Art of Literary Translation
Translators Emma Ramadan and Sam Taylor discuss the choices and difficulties of carrying a writer’s voice into another language, and how translation brings Francophone writers to new readers. Ramadan has translated more than 40 books, by Abdellah Taïa, Annie Ernaux and Virginie Despentes among others; Taylor more than 70, including David Diop, Maylis de Kerangal and Leïla Slimani. Stéphanie Ravillon, who teaches French and Francophone Studies at Brown, moderates.
