Closing the Ring: George Washington's War in the North, 1778-1781
Historian Jeff Denman argues that the northern war of 1778–1781, often written off as a stalemate, is where Washington's strategic flexibility and political skill were forged: through the faltering French alliance, the snowbound Morristown winter of 1779–80, supply shortages, a collapsing currency and short enlistments. Denman taught history in the Brookline schools and wrote John Quincy Adams: His Struggle with Slavery in Antebellum America.
