Holding Haitian Girlhood: On Seeing and Being Seen in Claire of the Sea Light
Régine Michelle Jean-Charles, chair of Cultures, Societies and Global Studies at Northeastern University, reads Edwidge Danticat's novel Claire of the Sea Light as one of her most deliberate portrayals of Haitian girlhood. She treats the title character as both visible and invisible, a doubleness that invokes a Vodou epistemology of balance. It is a New Directions lecture for African and African Diaspora Studies.
