Pan Tadeusz, aka The Last Days (1999)
Andrzej Wajda's 1999 adaptation of Adam Mickiewicz's national epic, shot in 1998 for the Romantic poet's bicentennial, keeps the poem's rhyming verse. Set in Polish-speaking Lithuania in 1811–12, it follows two noble families settling a decades-long feud as Napoleon prepares to invade Russia, and it sold more than six million tickets in Poland. On 35mm, in the Harvard Film Archive's Wajda centenary series.
