Man of Iron (1981)
Wajda's sequel to Man of Marble grew out of his meeting with the Gdańsk shipyard workers whose 1980 strike founded Solidarity, Poland's first independent trade union. The son of the earlier film's hero, Birkut, takes centre stage in a time-hopping mix of fiction and documentary, and the organisers Lech Wałęsa and Anna Walentynowicz appear as themselves. It won the 1981 Palme d'Or, months before martial law. On 35mm.
