Man of Marble (1977)
In Andrzej Wajda's 1977 film, a student director, Agnieszka (Krystyna Janda, in the first of four Wajda roles), investigates Mateusz Birkut (Jerzy Radziwiłowicz), a bricklayer celebrated as a labor hero in 1950s Nowa Huta who has since vanished. Mixing newsreel, reenactment and absurdist fiction, it waited more than a decade for approval, and a fifth of Poland saw it on release. Part of the Archive's Wajda centenary retrospective.
