Amma Ariyan (1986)
John Abraham's Amma Ariyan (1986), a road movie steeped in the revolutionary politics of 1980s Kerala, follows Purushan (Joy Mathew) as he journeys to find the mother of a dead jazz drummer. It was made by the Odessa Collective, which raised the budget through street performances and small donations. Its recent restoration, the only Indian film invited to Cannes in 2026, screens in the Cinema Masala series.
