Rita Charon founded the field of narrative medicine, which trains clinicians to read patients' accounts of illness as closely as a literary scholar reads a text. She holds an MD from Harvard and a PhD in English from Columbia, and speaks here on the phenomenology, aesthetics and science underlying the discipline.
