[ENVS] Maine’s Kelp Forests: A Case Study in Global Change Biology
Douglas Rasher, a senior research scientist at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, discusses a warming-induced “state shift” now unfolding in the kelp forests of the Gulf of Maine, “one of the fastest warming ocean basins globally.” He traces its drivers and how its effects ripple through every trophic level, and what the Gulf can teach about kelp restoration and about predicting and managing global change.
